Week number two of the 2009 FASCAR Weekly Racing Series saw
the Limited Late Models, Modifieds and Sportsman making their Season debut at
the high-banked half-mile.
The Modifieds where first on-tap and it was a familiar face
in Victory Lane as Tank Tucker [#15] was able to hold off Kevyn Terry [#1]to
take the win. Mark Vandevender [#7] came home third, while Orlando Speedworld
winner from week 1, Earl Beckner [#51] suffered problems about half-way through
the event and settled for fourth.
After the Modifieds, it was the Sportsman making their way
out for 25 laps. St. Cloud’s Timmy Todd Jr [#25] would go from the pole, while
Jason Foster [#49] sat alongside, coming off a second place finish just a week
prior at Orlando Speedworld.
Ten cars signed in to do battle, but the #7 of Brennan
Palmiter and #38 of Robert Glover both suffered problems in practice and were
unable to start the Feature.
Todd jumped out to the early lead with Foster settling in
for second, but the green did not stay out long as Mike Pletka went around in
turn two bringing out the first caution. With the field stacked up two-by-two
for the restart, it was once again Todd who held the advantage as the green
flag waved.
Behind Todd, Donny Williams [#111] got a great jump to the
inside of Foster for second. Williams and Foster raced side-by-side for a
handful of laps for the runner-up spot before Foster prevailed on the
high-side. Just one corner later, Williams got a run to the inside in turns one
and two, but the two got together sending both cars around and Pletka, with
nowhere to go made some hard contact with the right side of Williams machine.
After a brief interaction on the backstretch between Foster
and Williams, the field was re-aligned for the restart with Foster and Pletka
on the sidelines.
After some tense moments for the leaders as they tried to
get past the slower car of Matt Montineri [#10], who was making his first
career start, Todd went on to claim the win, with Williams recovering from the
earlier incident to take down the runner up spot.
“This car is off the hook tonight” said an elated Timmy Todd
in Victory Lane, “it’s a good comeback from Speedworld from last week… we blew
a power steering line… and I thought we could have won.” “Ain’t nothing gonna stop
this car right now… it’s unstoppable.”
The Limited Late Models were the third feature on the night
and saw 12 cars take the green. With a star studded field of Veteran Drivers
along with some young faces, the green flag waived for Michael Seay [#10] who
was the pole-sitter.
Seay had problems right from the start and dropped all the
way to fifth as the field exited turn two. Bobby Good [#19] led the field into
turn three, but veteran Brad May [#10x] out of Orlando got a great run through
turns three and four on the high-side and he took the top spot as they crossed
the start/finish line.
Caution came out on lap 3 as Richard Douglas [#6] went
around in turn tow, collecting the #04 of John Hannen. Both drivers were okay,
but both cars would sit pitside for the remainder of the race.
Brad May led the field back to green for the restart and
never looked back. Behind May, the battle was on for second between Good and
2007 Track Champion Davey Gibbs [#47]. Gibbs car looked real strong through the
middle of the corners as he was able close right up to Good’s rear bumper, but
lap after lap, he was unable to get up alongside.
As the laps ticked away, it was May leaving little doubt
that he had the car to beat, while Good and Gibbs continued to run nose-to-tail
for second. A few minor cautions slowed the field in the closing laps. As the
white flag waived, Gibbs once again carried a lot of momentum into turn one,
with no room to the inside, the two got together coming off of turn two,
sending Good’s KBC Development #19 around down the backstretch.
May came around to take the Yellow/Checker combo, with Gibbs
crossing the line in second, however Gibbs was penalized for rough driving,
giving Kevin Henry [#99] the runner-up spot. Henry, out of Deland, was making
his first career Late Model start. Third spot went to 2007 Rookie of the Year
Amanda Tonchuk [#18], while Gibbs would have to settle for a 7th place finish.
“It’s been a while since we been here. Haven’t raced here
since ’07, I miss being in Victory Circle.” May said in his Victory Lane
interview, “I’m hoping to do a lot more racing here this year.”
The Pub 44 Strictly Stocks were up next, and it was a couple
of Orlando Speedworld regulars that put on the show. William Hindman [#89] took
the lead in the closing stages to take down the feature win, with Tim Walters
Jr [#29], winner from week one at Orlando Speedworld battled right down to the
wire with John Witt [#27] to claim second. Witt rounded out the top three.
In the Super Stocks Feature, Scott Smith [#01], last week’s
winner had to start from the rear of the field, but once used the new double
file restart to his advantage just at the half-way point, and went on to become
the first two-time feature winner of 2009.
“I don’t know what I’m gonna do [if they go back to single
file restarts]” said Smith, who clearly had the dominant car. Defending Track
Champion Bobby Holley [#56] once again suffered motor problems for the second
straight week, falling out of the race early, Holley had to settle for the eighth
spot. David Russell [#16] led the way early before settling for second, ahead
of John Hodge [#00].
Other Track Champions not fairing so well in week #2
included Greg Skyta [#73] who, after a horrendous wreck late in 2008, had his
car back together for the ’09 Ltd. Late Model opener. Skyta, admittedly still
“shaking the car down” elected to start in the rear, and was not a factor in
the 30 lap event, but looks to be racing up towards the front of the pack in
the coming weeks.
The Limited Late Models, Modifieds and Sportsman move
back to Orlando Speedworld for week three, while the Bright House Challenge
Series Super Late Models kick off the ’09 BHCS next Saturday night here at the
high-banked half-mile, along with the Taylor Racing Products Pro-Trucks, Mini-Stocks,
Super Stocks and the Pub 44 Strictly Stocks. Qualifying is tentatively set for
7:30pm Saturday night for the BHCS Super Late Models.
