David Rogers and Brad May Split Twin 50's at New Smyrna

David Rogers and Brad May Split Twin 50's at New Smyrna

As the regular season begins to wind down at New Smyrna Speedway, the action on the track continues to be red hot! The fans in attendance were treated to an absolute classic in the Super Late Models and plenty of wild moments throughout the night.

Eleven Late models were on hand for the twin 50s and the first race was absolutely thrilling from start to finish. Anthony Sergi set fast time in qualifying but after the invert he started 6th, putting Doug Elliott on the pole. Elliot would jump out to a big lead early before Harold Crooms brought out the yellow after hitting the wall in turn 2. David Rogers made quick work of Elliott on the restart taking the lead with Brad May and Anthony Sergi in hot pursuit. The rest of the race went caution free with Rogers and May giving the fans their monies worth! The two had a thrilling side by side battle making contact several times. Rogers gave May the bottom but May just could not find a way to complete the pass. Rogers and May remained side by side or bumper to bumper the entire race with Anthony Sergi waiting for the leaders to make a mistake. May tried everything but was no match for Rogers Who took home his first win of the season. May was a close 2nd with Sergi 3rd. in race 2 Everyone had to use the same tires and it was clear who used up too much in race 1. This race was relatively clean with Brad May quickly getting out front and opening up a big lead on Daniel Keene Jr, who had issues in race one. It was clear that David Rogers was having to push his car to the limits in race one as he was not able to contend for the win this time around. When all was said, and done Brad May found victory lane for the 4th time this year and leads Anthony Sergi in the point by just 7 with two races remaining.

The American Auto Sportsman got back to their wild ways with Patrick Thomas and John Emerson making contact while battling for the lead. Emerson would spin narrowly missing Matthew Green and the rest of the field behind them. Both Thomas and Emerson would go to the back and would have another run in on the restart. Once things settled down, Matthew Green and Steve Barnes squared off for the race win, with Green ultimately winning the battle and scoring back to back victories! Barnes wound up 2nd and Patrick Thomas Stormed back through the field to finish 3rd, officially wrapping up the championship with one race remaining. For the first time in a while Thomas actually qualified for the dash for cash and worked his way up the lead with a couple laps to go. However, entering turn 3 on the final lap Don Keithly was able to slip underneath Thomas and steal the win away! Keithly’s win was definitely the feel-good story of the night as Keithly is pretty much a one-man team on small budget and he beat one of the best there is!

For the first time this season “Mr. Mini Stock” (Or should it be Mr. Mod Mini now??) Ted Vulpius dusted off his old Mod Mini and did not show any signs of rust. He was able to cool off the “Dominator” Tyler Simpson who has won all but 2 races this year. After an early caution for a Jeff Newton Spin, Vulpius found his way to the lead beating Simpson by quite a bit when the race came to a close. Simpson nursed a sputtering engine to a 2nd place finish with Richard Newton scoring a strong 3rd place finish. Tyler Simpson now Leads by 39 points over David Russel heading into the final month of the season.

A great field of Bombers took the green flag and the first part of the race looked like they were racing on the big track in Daytona as the top 6 or 7 cars ran two or three wide most of the race. The race had the crowd on the edge of their seats until Michael Scannell would spin in turn 3 and slide down the track before getting clobbered by the 77 of John Delancy. Both cars were destroyed in the incident. Under the yellow, leader Dan Webb would have rear wheel issues causing him to retire. After the incident, the field thinned out and Jared Zabele was able to out duel point leader John McCormick for his 3rd win of the season. Mike McCormick in his new car, came home 3rd. John McCormick will have a sub in his car next week while he is out of town, but he has built such a large lead in the standings he won’t even lose the point lead!

The Ground Ponders vintage racing club closed out the night with a great field of 13 awesome looking cars took the green. It was by far the most “interesting” start we have seen in quite some time. The field took off at a snail’s pace for about half a lap trying not to run over any one or damage their classic cars. Once things finally got spread put Matt Jarret took off to the lead and looked very strong as the race began to wind down. But, with 4 to go, we had our “Oh My Goodness” moment of the night when Rick Taylor slammed the turn 1 wall, climbing up the wall and nearly flipping over before coming to rest in the middle of turn 1 and 2. Thankfully Taylor was ok after that wild ride. Jim Zabele had closed in on Matt Jarret for the lead as they worked lapped traffic was caught up in this incident too ending his night and ending what was shaping up to be a great battle for the win. The race went back green with 4 laps left and Jarrett easily won the race over Danny Shearer and Fred Robinson.

Next Week the Modifieds return for a 50 lap contest along with the Super Late Models, Super Stocks, Bombers and the return of the ever popular spectator races. Don’t forget the Fan Loyalty program! Bring you ticket from last week’s race and receive $5 off and wear pink to support breast cancer awareness month!
